One of the frequent questions that travelers ask is how to buy the tickets to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. This topic is very special because there have been several changes compared to previous years, and some information out there on the Internet is totally outdated. So here we will explain the current situation and how to acquire them.
Types of Tickets to Machu Picchu
When wanting to buy the entrance ticket to Machu Picchu you will find four options:
1.- Machu Picchu: only entrance to the citadel
2.- Machu Picchu + Museum: includes admission to the museum and the citadel of Machu Picchu
3.- Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu: this option allows access to the citadel as well as to climb Huayna Picchu. And you can choose between two different schedules, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We recommend buying the second group at 10h00 because at 7h00 is very likely the site to be covered and cloudy.
4.- Machu Picchu + Mountain MP: Similar to above, except that instead of Huayna Picchu, you will climb the top of the mountain Machu Picchu. Available hours at 7:00 & 11:00 a.m..
Should I buy tickets in Peru or through Internet?
Since mid-2011 the option of buying tickets through Internet is available. But buying them in Cusco or Aguas Calientes are also maintained.
The problem is that the vast majority of travelers but it though Internet. Then, those who get them in Peru, either because they have no credit card (or their card has been rejected) or don’t know exactly which date they will be in Machu Picchu, they risk not to get tickets for that day.
We suggest you to pay special attention to buying Huayna Picchu tickets, only 500 places are available per day, so if you’re planning to climb it you should, at least, buy it 2 months in advance and 3 during high season.
As travel agents, we buy tickets for Machu Picchu very often, and sometimes we don’t find places for a particular date. However, the local authority (DRC) in charge of providing tickets for Machu Picchu, might have exceptions to issue additional tickets if they’re not available on the website. This might sound good for coming travelers, but we don’t know how flexible the authorities will be in the future.
Note that exceptions are only for tickets to Machu Picchu solo, it’s very unlikely to get same benefit for climbing the Huayna Picchu.
How do I buy it through Internet?
To buy the entrance ticket to Machu Picchu through Internet, go to the official website: http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe
But they will accept only a Visa International card available to buy online. In this last point, they will have to consult the bank that issued the card. Many have not been able to buy tickets online, this might be frustrating so make sure to have the right card. If you need support for that, don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll provide the tickets you need.
