Huayna Picchu Vs Machu Picchu Mountain

Difference between Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu Mountain

Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain? Which one should you hike? I had the chance to test both and lived a wonderful experience with each one of them. Read my experiences that will certainly help you to choose the one that suits you the best.

Huayna Picchu Mountain

Hiking the Huayna Picchu mountain is such a great experience. Its popularity comes from the thousands of photos that you have likely seen all over the net. It offers amazing views from the top, beautiful terraces, and challenging paths.

You must know that this is a moderate hike, quite steep, but doable if you’re used to hiking. Even children from 12 years old have access to climb the peak.

The beginning is quite easy, you’ll find many birds, butterflies, and insects on your way up. It took me an hour to reach the top, of course at a regular speed and stopping for taking pictures. However, be prepared for the last 20 minutes, the path becomes more vertical and the stairs smaller.

Once you get to the summit, you’ll find a big rock where to take pictures and enjoy a spectacular view looking down on the ruins!

Machu Picchu Mountain

The Machu Picchu Mountain is probably less popular than the Huayna Picchu Mountain. It’s located behind the Inca ruins, on the south part of Machu Picchu. This mountain is also bigger than the Huayna, and as a result, offers breathtaking views from the top.

The main difference is that the Machu Picchu mountain is less frightening and less steep. Which can be a great relief for those who have fear of heights. During your walk, you’ll notice that it has wider paths which make the hike quite doable even for little children.

On the other hand, the hike to the Machu Picchu Mountain is less crowded than the Huayna Picchu, this could be an advantage if you like to go at your own pace and fully enjoy the experience.

All along your hike, you will find abundant vegetation like orchids, as well as butterflies and birds. I recommend that you stop at the terraces for a moment in order to deeply breathe and feel the energy that this place emanates.

Conclusion

Both hikes are so recommended. Ideal for those who love incredible short walks. Personally, I’d take the Huayna Picchu mountain if I’m with moderate fitness, have no fear of heights, and if I’m willing to book the ticket quite in advance (we recommend at least 2 months before).

On the other hand, I’d take the Machu Picchu Mountain if I’m coming with my family and kids. Also, I’d take this hike if I prefer not to be in the crowds and have a quiet experience. Regarding availability, you’ll be able to find spots with 1 month of anticipation or even a couple of weeks before during the low season (January-March).
